Custom fields

Settings → Fields & tags (admin and owner only) has two independent tools for organising contacts: tags for quick, colour-coded grouping, and custom fields for structured data that appears on every contact.

Custom fields

A custom field is an extra piece of information every contact can carry — a ZIP code, a lead source, an account number, anything specific to your business that isn't one of Relay's built-in contact properties. Once created, a field appears on every contact's detail view and becomes selectable in the Update Contact Field automation action.

  1. Under Custom fields, type a name (e.g. "Lead source").
  2. Click Add field.
  3. It's immediately available on every contact.

Renaming a field is inline — click into its name, edit, and it saves on blur. Deleting one asks for confirmation, since it removes that field (and its values) from every contact and can't be undone. Field names must be unique on the account, case-insensitively — "ZIP Code" and "zip code" would collide.

Tags

Tags are short, colour-coded labels you attach to contacts for filtering and grouping — for example "VIP" or "Newsletter." Create one with a name and a colour from the built-in palette (red, orange, amber, emerald, cyan, blue, violet, pink). Deleting a tag removes it from every contact it's attached to; this can't be undone, so Relay asks you to confirm the tag's name before it does.

Tags are applied to individual contacts from the contact detail view or from bulk actions in Contacts — this settings page only manages the catalogue of tags that exist, not which contacts have them.

Who can manage this

Creating, renaming and deleting both tags and custom fields is limited to admins and owners, matching the rest of account-wide settings (see Members and roles). Everyone can see and use existing tags and fields elsewhere in the app.
